Terrorist Group Invades Mera, Leaving Trail of Destruction and Death
Naijawebinfo has learned that a terrorist group known as Lakurawa has wreaked havoc on Mera, a community in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing 15 people and stealing over 100 cows.
A prominent community resident, Bashir Isah Mera, has confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. According to Mera, the terrorist group attacked the town while people were preparing for Jumat prayer, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left 15 residents dead.
Mera noted that the Lakurawas are hiding in the Sokoto bush, where they coordinate their attacks. He added that the state governor, Nasir Idris, has ordered the deployment of soldiers to the community to contain the situation.
A combined force of security personnel, including the commanding officer of Dukku barracks, the DSS boss, the Commissioner of Police, and soldiers, has been mobilized to restore normalcy to Mera town and its surroundings.
In a bid to recover their stolen cows, hundreds of residents mobilized to pursue the terrorist group into the bush. The ensuing exchange of fire resulted in the deaths of 15 people, including two members of the Lakurawas.
According to Mera, the terrorist group had initially only stolen cows and demanded “Zakat” from the owners, but this was their first attack resulting in human casualties. The group had been terrorizing the community for almost two months.
The state’s Deputy Governor, Senator Abubakar Umar Tafida, and the Emir of Argungu, Samaila Mera, have visited the affected community to condole with the families of the deceased. They assured the people that the governor had pledged to ensure their protection against further attacks by the terrorist group.
At the time of filing this report, the Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Abubakar, had not issued a statement on the incident.
