Kano State Chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Hit with Fresh Blow as Two Federal Lawmakers Defect from Kwankwasiyya Movement
Naijawebinfo reports that the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has been dealt another significant blow following the announcement by two House of Representatives members from Kano State, Aliyu Sani Madakin Gini (Kano Municipal) and Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure), that they will no longer be affiliated with the movement.
The departure of these lawmakers, who served as stalwarts of the movement, is seen as a direct response to ongoing conflicts between the NNPP-led Kano State government and the Kwankwasiyya Movement. The controversial dissolution of the five emirate councils in Kano State, a move that directly affects Rurum, who holds the traditional title of Turakin Rano in the dissolved Rano Emirate, is reportedly a major reason for their departure.
Rurum publicly announced his withdrawal from the movement, citing unspecified reasons, but sources close to the situation suggest that he is responding to the dissolving of the emirates. Efforts to gather further information from him were unsuccessful due to a reported network issue.
Madakin Gini, who serves as the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, publicly disassociated himself from the movement during a rally in Kano, urging his supporters to abandon the red cap, a symbol of the movement, citing its association with submission. He accused the movement of prioritizing loyalty over merit and leadership, stating that he was no longer affiliated with the movement.
In a direct address to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Madakin Gini expressed concerns about the governor’s safety within the movement, warning that he was under pressure to conform to the movement’s demands. He also highlighted the efforts of a campaign urging the governor to liberate himself from the movement’s influence.
Madakin Gini further criticized the movement, saying that the red cap represents a symbol of control, implying that its leader seeks to claim ownership of the accomplishments of others. He urged his followers to distance themselves from the movement, stating that its practices are deceptive and restrictive.
