Nollywood actress Ufuoma McDermott opens up about her struggle with chronic kidney disease, attributing it to her past habits of chronic painkiller use.
A popular Nigerian entertainment site, Naijawebinfo, recently shared an enlightening interview between Ufuoma and media personality Chude Jideonwo. In the interview, the actress spoke candidly about her experience with chronic kidney disease, revealing that her journey with the condition started due to her prolonged consumption of strong painkillers.
The thespian shared how she developed a habit of taking strong painkillers to alleviate her migraines, often going overboard and overusing the medication. She admitted that it was a foolish mistake she made in her youth.
Now, she wants to educate others about the importance of prioritizing their health.
When asked about the origin of her chronic kidney disease, Ufuoma revealed: “My kidneys started suffering because of medication abuse. I had always relied on strong painkillers to alleviate my migraine pain. I took many of these painkillers, sometimes to the extent that they would run out, and I’d replace them.” She recalled an instance where she even shared her stash with friends when asked, highlighting her regret for such reckless behavior.
Her journey with the condition started earlier than many people realize, as her doctor first diagnosed her in 2009. By then, her kidney damage was quite severe. Although she began medication soon after, her brother was only diagnosed 12 years later, with stage 4 kidney disease. His delay in seeking medical attention was due in part to late-stage diagnosis, resulting in complications such as dialysis.
Ufuoma urges people to listen to her story and reflect on the importance of looking after their health. Sharing her regret over her actions, she wishes everyone knew how easily preventable diseases like kidney disease can become when they take control of their own well-being.
