Bayer Leverkusen Coach Xabi Alonso Sets the Record Straight on Liverpool Speculation
Xabi Alonso, the Spanish head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, has put the rumors about his potential succession of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool to rest. Despite being mentioned as a strong contender for the role, Alonso opted not to pursue the opportunity, choosing instead to concentrate on leading his current team to success in the Bundesliga.
During a recent press conference ahead of a crucial Champions League match between Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool, Alonso addressed the speculation surrounding his potential departure. In March, reports emerged of Klopp’s intention to leave Anfield, sparking a flurry of interest in potential replacements.
However, Alonso has revealed that his focus was always on winning the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen, and he remained committed to that goal even when his name was bandied about as a contender for the Liverpool job.
“I was aware of the conversations taking place, but at the time, my sole focus was on achieving our league goal with Leverkusen,” Alonso explained. “We didn’t engage with any other clubs, and I decided to prioritize my current role.”
It’s worth noting that Liverpool went on to appoint Arne Slot, who has steered the team to a strong start in the Premier League this season, with the club currently sitting atop the table after 10 matches.
Meanwhile, under Alonso’s leadership, Bayer Leverkusen have made impressive strides. Last season, they claimed the Bundesliga title and reached the Europa League final.
