Aregbesola Advocates for Parliamentary System of Government
Former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has expressed his opposition to the executive system of government, calling for a switch to the parliamentary system in Nigeria.
In his opinion, a single individual cannot effectively govern a population of 120 million people without checks and balances. He made this assertion at a National Dialogue on Home-Grown Parliamentary System in Abuja.
Aregbesola believes that the parliamentary system is better suited to Nigeria’s needs. According to him, this system allows for collective decision-making, which is essential for advancing the interests of the majority of the population.
“The idea that one person can govern 120 million people without checks and balances is unrealistic,” he said. “I believe that a collective arrangement, as provided by the parliamentary system, is more suitable for Nigeria.”
This stance is not without precedent. Earlier this year, a group of 60 lawmakers in the House of Representatives introduced a bill aimed at amending the 1999 Constitution to transition from the presidential to the parliamentary system of government. The proposed change is intended to reduce the high cost of governance in light of dwindling revenue.
