Tragedy Strikes in Plateau State as Mining Site Collapse Claims 13 Lives
A devastating mining site collapse in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State has left a trail of sorrow and grief, with at least 13 people losing their lives in the disaster.
The incident, which occurred on November 10, has sent shockwaves through the community, as families struggle to come to terms with the loss of young lives. According to Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, seven of the deceased were residents of the area.
The collapsed site, located near Jos South and Jos North LGAs, has raised concerns about the safety conditions at Nigeria’s mining locations. Riti expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy, saying, “These young people were out searching for a means of livelihood, only to meet their untimely death.” The victims, mostly aged between 18 and 30, were engaged in mining to make ends meet in the face of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Mining accidents have become a recurring problem in Nigeria, with several deadly incidents recorded in recent years. In June, a mining site in Niger State collapsed following heavy rains, although seven individuals were eventually rescued. Earlier this year, two people were killed and 77 others injured in Ibadan, Oyo State, due to illegal mining activities.
