Obidient Movement’s National Coordinator Asserts Movement’s Supremacy Over Labour Party
Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has made a bold declaration, stating that the movement is larger than the Labour Party (LP). Speaking in an interview with Arise News in Abuja, Tanko emphasized that the Obidient Movement will explore alternative avenues to serve Nigerians if the LP fails to prioritize good governance and accountability.
Although the movement faced significant setbacks during the 2023 general election, Tanko reassured that they are ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. He noted that the LP had fallen short in covering 1,760 polling units, and the Obidient Movement is now focused on building a solid foundation in all units.
“The Obidient Movement is a larger entity than the Labour Party,” Tanko emphasized. “We have a wide range of supporters, including academics, traders, and even members of other political parties.”
“If it becomes inevitable that the Labour Party is unwilling to adopt the principles of good governance, we will have to explore other options,” he added.
During the 2023 general election, the Obidient Movement was criticized for its lack of structures in certain polling units. However, Tanko stressed that the movement is now preparing to face the challenges head-on.
Furthermore, Tanko stated that the Obidient Movement is expanding its reach beyond its initial influence under the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. He emphasized that the movement has garnered significant support across Nigeria, including in the northern regions.
Regarding the disappointment among Nigerians over the conduct of Labour Party lawmakers elected with Obi’s influence, Tanko highlighted the importance of building a strong structure within the movement to address public dissatisfaction.
