Ondo Governorship Election: Political Parties Unleash Cash and Allies in Final Push
With just four days to go before the Ondo State governorship election, political parties are pulling out all the stops to secure victory. Their strategies include stockpiling cash for alleged vote buying, finalizing merger deals with smaller parties, and wooing influential community leaders with substantial sums to mobilize voters.
Insiders reveal that at least ₦20,000 has been earmarked for each voter on election day, a move aimed at buying support and influencing the outcome. Major parties are reportedly in the final stages of negotiating alliances with smaller parties to bolster their vote counts.
One source described the election as a “money-for-money” affair, where politicians plan to flood polling areas with cash to win over voters. They allegedly plan to pay up to ₦20,000 per vote, transferring the money directly to voters’ accounts once they’ve cast their ballots.
Another source confirmed that some parties have set aside significant funds to woo voters, with plans to pay between ₦5,000 and ₦20,000 depending on their popularity in each area.
“Many parties rely on the money they spend to buy votes on Election Day. They plan to spend ₦5,000 or ₦10,000 in areas where they’re popular and N15,000 to N20,000 where they’re not. In some areas, money will ultimately decide who wins the poll,”
Furthermore, politicians from various parties have been flooding banks to withdraw as much cash as possible in the past few days. Some bank customers have been told that there’s limited cash available, with withdrawals often being restricted to less than requested.
