French Football Star Wissam Ben Yedder Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison After Sexual Assault Conviction
Celebrated French striker Wissam Ben Yedder, formerly a member of the national team, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a French court, a decision handed down after his trial concluded in November 2024.
The sentencing marks another legal chapter in Ben Yedder’s saga following his initial two-year suspended sentence for sexual assault earlier this year. He has now been charged with more severe crimes, including rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault, over alleged incidents in southern France.
In reaching its verdict, the judge recommended a two-year term, which the court deemed fitting. Ben Yedder’s attorney has filed an appeal on behalf of his client.
This case stemmed from an alleged sexual assault and began when the plaintiff brought suit against Ben Yedder in September 2024. He was promptly arrested after being found unconscious in his car on the French Riviera.
The events began with Ben Yedder’s refusal to comply with police instructions to stop the vehicle, which required extraordinary measures to intervene. His driver’s license has now been suspended for six months due to this infraction.
Court documents show that the player, now 34, admitted to driving while under the influence after being apprehended and is subsequently undergoing alcohol rehabilitation. According to Ben Yedder, he had no memory of the alleged sexual assault and maintains his innocence despite being found guilty.
In light of the developments, Ben Yedder, once linked to Monaco, is without a team, his last contract having ended following last season.
Last season, he secured a significant spot with 16 goals and three assists as Monaco finished a respectful second in the French league, trailing Paris Saint-Germain.
Benoit Éric Wissam “Wissam Ben Yedder” made appearances in 223 games throughout his five-season stay, totaling 118 goals – just 4 goals less than Monaco’s record hold Delio Onnis and boasting a significant three-quarters-century streak across various Monaco teams. With an even later French appearance at mid-June 2022, Wissam may find a potential come-and-come. The FIFA rankings also showcase an increase. The number, although in reverse.
