A tanker explosion has rocked Jigawa State, North West Nigeria, leaving a trail of panic and destruction.
A recent report by Naijawebinfo highlights the alarming frequency of such incidents, with the latest explosion occurring just a month after a similar tragedy in October, resulting in over 170 fatalities.
The latest incident took place on October 15, 2024, when a petrol-laden truck traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State suddenly exploded in Majia, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Confirming the incident, Aliyu M. A., Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service, Jigawa State Command, revealed that the explosion occurred on Tuesday and caused widespread panic among bystanders.
According to Aliyu, the incident happened at the Jigawa-Kano border, where a tanker carrying petrol caught fire and exploded, prompting a swift response from the Federal Fire Service.
Operatives from the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have also made a significant arrest in a separate incident.
A tanker driver, Afeez Adegbola, 47, was apprehended on Friday night in Ikirun while attempting to offload 10,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) intended for the NNPC mega station in Osogbo, Osun State.
Adegbola had initially loaded 40,000 litres of petrol for delivery to the NNPC mega station but allegedly diverted 10,000 litres to an independent filling station on the outskirts of the state capital.
The NSCDC has hailed the arrest as a major success in its efforts to curb fuel diversion and hoarding, which contribute to artificial fuel scarcity.
