Nigeria’s Super Eagles Seal 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Berth with Draw Against Benin Republic
In a thrilling encounter, the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured their spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after holding Benin Republic to a 1-1 draw in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The Beninese, who hosted the match due to a lack of eligible stadiums in their home country, started strong and dominated the early stages of the game. Their persistence paid off in the 16th minute when Mohamed Tijani, a 27-year-old defender, scored the opening goal.
The Nigerian team, known as the Cheetahs, responded by adopting a defensive strategy and relying on swift counter-attacks to challenge the Beninese defense. However, they struggled to find their rhythm and make meaningful inroads into the opposition’s penalty box.
At halftime, Benin Republic maintained their slim lead and continued to employ a similar defensive approach in the second half. Coach Augustine Eguavoen made a series of substitutions to breathe new life into the Nigerian attack, and one of the substitutes, Moses Simon, played a crucial role in the equalizing goal. Simon’s cross found Victor Osimhen, who headed the ball home in the 81st minute.
Despite their best efforts, the Super Eagles failed to find a winner, but the draw was enough to secure their spot in the 2025 tournament. With four points from their remaining matches, including a game against Rwanda in Uyo on November 18, the Nigerian team will top Group D and book their ticket to Morocco, regardless of the outcome of their final match.
