Bayelsa State Postpones School Resumption Due to Flooding
In response to the ongoing flooding that has affected many schools in the state, the Bayelsa State Government has announced a one-week extension to the resumption date for all public and private secondary and primary schools.
Initially scheduled to resume on November 18, schools will now reopen on November 25, 2024. The decision was made to ensure the safety and preparedness of school facilities before students return.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Simon-Peter Okene, explained that the extension is necessary due to the significant disruptions caused by the flooding, which has forced schools to remain closed longer than anticipated.
The state government is working to restore normalcy and mitigate the impact of the floods on the academic calendar. Parents and guardians have been assured that measures are being taken to address the situation.
Okene emphasized the importance of adhering to the officially approved school calendar and ensuring that all school safety regulations are followed, including cutting grass and fumigating school premises and buildings before resumption.
The government also expressed empathy for all Bayelsans who have been affected by the flooding.
