South African FA President Danny Jordaan Arrested for Sexual Assault

Why South Africa FA President Danny Jordaan Was Arrested

South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan was taken into custody on Wednesday, accused of misusing funds for personal gain.

Jordaan, a key figure in securing South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, had attempted to obtain a court injunction to prevent his arrest earlier in the week. However, the Johannesburg High Court was not scheduled to hear his application until Thursday, leaving him vulnerable to arrest on Wednesday.

The charges against him stem from a police investigation that included a raid on SAFA’s offices in March. The probe uncovered allegations that Jordaan exploited his position from 2014 to 2018, using SAFA’s resources for his own benefit. This includes hiring a private security firm for personal protection and contracting a public relations agency without the necessary authorization from SAFA’s governing board.

Jordaan, 73, is facing these allegations alongside two co-accused: Gronie Hluyo, SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer, and businessman Trevor Neethling. All three are set to appear in court on the same day.

As of now, neither Jordaan nor SAFA has issued an official statement on the matter. However, in his legal affidavit, Jordaan has categorically denied any wrongdoing, maintaining his innocence.
