The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has unequivocally denied claims that it has made an agreement to hand over its presidential ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other prominent member ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a recent interview with Punch, the party’s Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, cleared the air on the issue, emphasizing the party’s commitment to a transparent and democratic process in determining its presidential candidate.
Osadolor underscored that the party is yet to receive any notification from potential candidates, neither has it called for primary elections. As a result, the party is unsure of who will be vying for the ticket or who will ultimately emerge victorious.
In his words, “At this point, we’re not aware of who will be running or who won’t. We haven’t issued notice for the sale of forms, and we haven’t called for primaries. So, we can’t make any predictions at this stage.”
This clarification comes in the wake of a recent statement by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who expressed doubts about Atiku’s chances of securing the PDP’s presidential ticket again in 2027.
Osadolor acknowledged that Wike’s views might hold some weight if past events were considered, but he also cited the example of Donald Trump’s unexpected victory as a reminder that anything is possible in politics.
Osadolor further stated, “Even if Trump could win over Kamala Harris, you can’t rule out the possibility of Atiku’s comeback. Wike’s points are valid, and it’s only natural to consider the past. However, ultimately, it’s about the people’s choices and opinions.”
He also cautioned that Atiku would likely need to win over support from various quarters, including that of Nyesom Wike himself, to emerge victorious.
