The stage was set for a thrilling conclusion to Group B at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, where Edo Queens staged an unforgettable comeback to defeat reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1.
The match got off to a shocking start for Edo Queens, who found themselves trailing 1-0 thanks to Melinda Kgadiete’s 24th-minute strike for Sundowns. However, the Nigerian side refused to give up, and their perseverance was rewarded when Peace Essien equalized in the 95th minute.
The drama was far from over, as Mary Mamudu seized a defensive mistake six minutes later to secure the win, sending Edo Queens soaring to the top of the group with a total of seven points.
This remarkable comeback also marked a significant milestone for Edo Queens, as they became the first Nigerian side to reach the top of the group stage in the competition.
In other action, Masar from Egypt booked their spot in the semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Central Bank of Ethiopia Ladies at Ben M’Hamed El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida. Despite an inferior goal difference, Masar finished with the same number of points as Edo Queens.
Mamelodi Sundowns, on the other hand, saw their title defense come to an end, finishing third with three points, while Central Bank of Ethiopia Ladies left the competition without a single point and a goal difference of -8.
Edo Queens’ impressive start to the tournament, which included a 3-0 victory over Central Bank of Ethiopia Ladies and a draw against Masar, laid the foundation for their thrilling final round. Although they faced challenges converting chances, their persistence ultimately paid off, as they secured the win in stoppage time.
The team now has their sights set on making history by becoming the first Nigerian side to reach the final of the prestigious continental competition. Standing in their way are TP Mazembe, and Edo Queens are building on the legacy established by Bayelsa Queens, who reached the knockout stage in 2022.
Moreover, Edo Queens are the first Nigerian club to advance to the semi-finals without a loss, maintaining their unbeaten record in three matches.
This tournament marked a turning point for Sundowns, as they became the first defending champions to exit the competition at the group stage, following their 2022 final appearance and 2023 semi-final appearance.
