Segun Odegbami, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, has expressed his admiration for Victor Osimhen, who has matched his own impressive goal-scoring record for the national team.
The milestone achievement came in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic on Thursday night, with Osimhen scoring a crucial equalizing goal in the 82nd minute.
The 25-year-old Galatasaray forward has now joined Odegbami as the joint second-highest scorer in Nigeria’s history, with 23 goals each.
In an interview with Eagle7fm, Odegbami praised Osimhen’s achievement, saying, “It’s a good thing that he has equalled my record. This shows we now have players who can deliver the goals for the national team.”
Osimhen has a golden opportunity to surpass Odegbami’s record when the Super Eagles face Rwanda on November 15. This match will provide the perfect platform for him to cement his place in Nigerian football history.
Odegbami and Osimhen currently share the second spot in the rankings for Nigeria’s top goalscorers, with legendary forward Rashidi Yekini holding the top spot with an impressive 37 goals.
Osimhen has paid tribute to Yekini, describing him as the greatest Nigerian striker ever, a testament to the late forward’s enduring impact on Nigerian football.
Osimhen emphasized, “If I equal it, I equal it. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker for the Super Eagles.”
As the Super Eagles look ahead to their upcoming fixtures, all eyes will be on Osimhen as he strives not only to rewrite Nigerian football history but also to inspire the next generation of footballers.
