Ogun Governor, APC Lock Horns with PDP Candidate Amid Local Government Election Controversy

A clash has erupted between the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, in the wake of the local government election held in Ogun on Saturday.

According to reports from Naijawebinfo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) swept all 20 local government chairmanship and 236 councillor positions in the council elections.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, Babatunde Osibodu, announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Abeokuta on Sunday.

The election, which saw 19 political parties, including the PDP and Labour Party, participate, has been shrouded in controversy following allegations of police brutality and thuggery.

The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, accused Adebutu of bringing in over 40 policemen from MOPOL 49 in Lagos, who allegedly opened fire on the newly elected Vice Chairman of Ikenne Local Government and another voter, leaving one with a shattered leg.

In response, Adebutu’s media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, described the allegations as “lies from the pit of hell” and an attempt to cover up the intimidation and oppression of the people of Ogun East during the local government election.

Orekoya claimed that Governor Abiodun and his security operatives had promoted thuggery and violence in Ogun East, and accused them of trying to intimidate Adebutu’s son, who was attacked by thugs in the neighbourhood near his house.

Orekoya also claimed that one of the policemen attached to Adebutu was shot by the thugs and taken to the hospital, and that the Governor’s security operatives had stormed Adebutu’s house, claiming it was on the instruction of the Inspector General.

The drama played out hours after the APC won the local government election, casting a shadow over the political landscape of Ogun State.
