Rwanda Stuns Nigeria, Defeats Super Eagles in Uyo

2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Rwanda Beat Super Eagles Of Nigeria In Uyo

Astounding Upset as Rwanda National Football Team Beats Nigeria’s Super Eagles

Rwanda’s determination and perseverance paid off as they pulled off a remarkable win against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on November 18 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. This unexpected victory was crucial in their bid to advance to the tournament.

Rwanda had a narrow window of opportunity to book their place in the 2025 AFCON. They needed to defeat Nigeria and rely on Libya beating Benin Republic to become the second team in Group D, aside from Nigeria, to secure a spot in the tournament.

To everyone’s surprise, the Rwandans executed their plan flawlessly, taking home the maximum three points against the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The first half was a closely contested affair, with Rwanda enjoying more possession but struggling to break through Nigeria’s defense. Nigeria, on the other hand, had a few opportunities but were largely on the backfoot.

The score remained 0-0 at halftime, setting the stage for an explosive second half as Rwanda sought to capitalize on their chances.

Nigeria’s coach, Augustine Eguavoen, made some key changes to his lineup, introducing Samuel Chukwueze and Frank Onyeka at the start of the second half. One of these changes paid off when Chukwueze scored a stunning solo goal in the 59th minute, dribbling from midfield to Rwanda’s 18-yard box before slotting the ball home.

However, Rwanda refused to back down and scored two quick goals within three minutes of the second half, taking the lead and securing a 2-1 away win.

Although this win was a significant upset, Rwanda ultimately finished third in Group D and failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON. Nigeria secured top spot with 11 points from six games, while Benin Republic claimed the second qualification spot following their 0-0 draw with Libya.
