Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been penalized for his racist remarks towards teammate Son Heung-min, receiving a seven-match suspension and a hefty £100,000 fine.
According to reports, Bentancur’s offensive comments, made during a pre-season interview, will keep him sidelined for the next several weeks, effectively ruling him out of various domestic competitions.
As a prominent player for manager Ange Postecoglou, Bentancur’s absence from the team will undoubtedly have a significant impact on their lineup.
Although he has missed only one Premier League match due to a concussion earlier in the season, the suspension creates a notable hole in Postecoglou’s strategy.
The Football Association recently released a statement detailing the decision, stating that Bentancur had breached FA Rule E3 by “acting improperly, using abusive and/or insulting words, and bringing the game into disrepute” through his media interview.
