Mutiu Adepoju Expects Victor Osimhen to Shatter Nigeria’s All-Time Top Scorer Record
As Victor Osimhen closes in on Rashidi Yekini’s record, former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has expressed confidence in the young striker’s ability to break the mark. Osimhen’s recent goal in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic brought him level with Segun Odegbami on 22 goals, leaving Yekini’s record of 37 goals firmly in his sights.
Osimhen’s focus now turns to surpassing Yekini’s milestone, and Adepoju believes the 25-year-old has the drive and skill to achieve it. In an interview with SuperSport, Adepoju stated, “Osimhen is a dedicated player who gives his all for the national team. I’m confident he can break Yekini’s record.”
Adepoju also had strong words for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding the future of the Super Eagles’ head coach, Augustine Eguavoen. Despite rumors suggesting the NFF is looking to hire a foreign coach, Adepoju is adamant that Eguavoen should be retained in his role.
Eguavoen has been leading the team in an interim capacity since September, guiding them to qualify for AFCON 2025 with a strong record of three wins, two draws, and just one defeat. Adepoju praised Eguavoen’s performance, stating, “I would assess his performance very positively. Qualifying for AFCON is a significant achievement, and I believe he deserves ongoing support. We must continue to encourage him as he works to lead the team forward.”
