PDP’s Umar Damagum Dispels Rumors, Reveals True Purpose of Meeting with State Chairmen
In a statement made at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum clarified that his meeting with state chairmen was not intended to plot a strategy to retain his position.
Damagum emphasized that the gathering was simply a normal, interactive session aimed at familiarizing the new chairmen with the party’s hierarchy. He pointed out that more than half of the chairmen in attendance were new to the position.
Contrary to speculations suggesting a connection to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which has been postponed multiple times, Damagum insisted that Wednesday’s meeting was unrelated to NEC issues. He stated that such matters fall solely within the purview of the National Working Committee and the party chairman.
Damagum also refuted claims that the meeting was intended to address concerns related to the upcoming NEC meeting. He stated categorically that the discussion centered on introducing the new chairmen and discussing matters pertinent to the party’s ongoing Zonal Congresses.
The acting national chairman further highlighted the purpose of the meeting: to welcome the new chairmen, familiarize them with the National Working Committee, and discuss ongoing Zonal Congresses. He mentioned that forms for the congresses are already available.
Austin Nwachukwu, Imo state and Interim Chairman, PDP Chairman’s Forum, corroborated Damagum’s statement, affirming that the meeting aimed to facilitate a personal introduction between the state chairmen and the National Working Committee.
Nwachukwu elaborated that the gathering allowed chairmen to become acquainted with one another and discuss topics such as unity and zonal congresses. He emphasized the importance of party unity and encouraged members to participate in the congresses.
