Kogi State Government Takes a Tough Stand Against Yahoo Boys and Unscrupulous Landlords

The Kogi State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Abanika Taiye, sounded a stern warning to property owners who provide shelter to individuals involved in internet fraud, commonly known as Yahoo Boys. The announcement came during a press briefing held in Lokoja.

The move is part of the government’s preparations for a two-day stakeholders’ symposium on housing and urban development in the state.

The Commissioner expressed dismay at the complicity of some landlords, accusing them of frustrating government efforts to curb criminal activities by renting properties to individuals with questionable financial means.

As part of its effort to address the issue, the government is working on a new policy that aims to regulate property ownership and rental practices. The bill, currently being deliberated in the House of Assembly, seeks to hold landlords accountable for the tenants they accommodate.

Taiye emphasized that the government is committed to creating awareness and engaging all relevant stakeholders in the building sector to develop a comprehensive framework for providing affordable housing solutions for the people.

He stated, “Policy and laws are crucial in any organization or ministry. When laws are made and strictly adhered to, the government can effectively curb the excesses of property owners and create a safer and more organized urban environment for our residents.”

The ministry has also set up measures to prevent exploitation and ensure compliance among property owners, with the aim of creating a safer and more organized urban environment.
