17-Year-Old Student Assaulted and Confined in Dog Cage for Visiting Classmate
A harrowing incident occurred last weekend when a 17-year-old student, Samuel Onyeme, was brutally assaulted and confined in a dog cage by his classmate’s father and two sons in Delta State.
According to Samuel’s mother, Mrs. Onyeme, the incident unfolded when her son visited his classmate, Anastasia Celestine, at her residence on Sunday evening. The two were having a discussion outside the house when Anastasia’s father and his sons attacked Samuel, dragging him into their compound and inflicting severe physical injuries.
Mrs. Onyeme recounted that her son was beaten with wooden planks and locked in a dog cage, while his mobile phone was confiscated and used to deceive her into believing that everything was fine. She was only allowed to see her son after two hours, and even then, she was met with a horrific sight.
The situation took a turn for the worse when Samuel’s sister, Jessica, who was trying to seek help, was also assaulted by the Celestine family. It wasn’t until a human rights advocate, Victor Ojei, intervened and alerted the police that Samuel was finally rescued from the dog cage at 10:00 pm that night.
Ojei has since lodged a formal petition with the Commissioner of Police, the Attorney General, and the National Human Rights Commission, calling for an immediate investigation and prosecution of Anastasia’s father and his sons on charges of kidnapping, unlawful detention, assault, and attempted murder.
The petition highlights the brutal nature of the assault, which included the use of wooden planks and the confinement of Samuel in a dog cage. It also notes that the family’s actions contravened several sections of the Nigerian Criminal Code and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Laws.
Samuel is currently undergoing treatment at the Asaba Specialist Hospital for his physical injuries and psychological trauma. The police have yet to comment on the incident, but efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
