Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen Praises Legendary Nigerian Striker Rashidi Yekini
Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian striker, has expressed his deep respect for the late Rashidi Yekini, widely regarded as Nigeria’s greatest footballer of all time. This admiration comes despite Osimhen’s own impressive goalscoring record for the Super Eagles, which is rapidly approaching Yekini’s long-standing mark.
At just 25 years old, Osimhen has already achieved significant success in his international career. His recent goal against the Benin Republic equalled Segun Odegbami’s record, making him the joint second-highest goalscorer for the Super Eagles with an impressive 23 goals to his name.
Although Osimhen is on the verge of breaking Yekini’s record of 37 goals in 62 appearances, he is keen to emphasize that it would not diminish the legendary striker’s legacy. In a heartfelt video interview, Osimhen stated that his goal is to simply do his job, win games, and score goals, regardless of whether he equals or surpasses Yekini’s record.
Osimhen acknowledges that Yekini’s record has stood the test of time and is determined to celebrate the late striker’s achievements. He recognizes that Yekini is the greatest striker the Super Eagles have ever had, citing his iconic goal in the 1994 World Cup and his successive AFCON top scorer titles as evidence of his status as a football legend.
With more matches on the horizon, including the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, Osimhen has the opportunity to further his pursuit of Yekini’s record. However, he remains humble and focused on his ultimate goal of winning games and scoring goals for his team.
