Super Eagles Striker Sadiq Umar Laments Fan Treatment: “We’re Killing Ourselves”

Sadiq Umar, a Super Eagles striker, has voiced his discontent with the way Nigerian fans have been treating the national team players, particularly in the aftermath of their disappointing performance in the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying phase.

The Super Eagles’ struggles on the pitch have led to mounting frustration among fans and pundits alike. Their recent 1-1 draw against Benin Republic and 2-1 loss to Rwanda have left many wondering if the team is equipped to make a meaningful impact in the upcoming 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

In an interview with Oma TV, Sadiq Umar shared his concerns about the toxic atmosphere surrounding the national team. He expressed his disappointment with fans who criticize players without providing constructive feedback or support. “When we come to play here, it’s not about the money; it’s for the love,” he said. “Where you feel is your home, they tell you it’s not.”.

Sadiq also drew attention to the stark contrast between the support players receive internationally and the treatment they face at home. “When you go to Europe to play, you’re loved and supported there, but when you come to your country, your people begin to ask what you’re doing and who brought you, even telling you to return to Europe,” he lamented.

He also touched on the mental pressures players face due to harsh criticism online, stating that many of his teammates experience distress after games due to negative comments. “There are some of my teammates that are down after every game we play because the fans are killing them on social media,” he revealed.

Sadiq emphasized the importance of mental resilience in football, saying, “Football these days is about mentality. If you’re not mentally tough, you cannot play football.”
