Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, a renowned Nigerian comedian and actor, has sparked a heated debate on the topic of polygamy and its suitability for African cultures. According to him, monogamy, which is commonly practiced in many parts of the world, is actually failing in the region.
In a recent conversation on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Onyegbule expressed his views on the matter. He suggested that many couples in monogamous marriages are only pretending to be happy and that polygamy could be a more suitable option for many African families.
Onyegbule believes that polygamy allows for more flexibility and freedom. “Forget the lip service we pay to polygamy. I still think that polygamy is the best form of marriage for Africa. Monogamy is just not working,” he said. He went on to question the difference between polygamy and monogamy, pointing out that while polygamy allows for the marrying of multiple partners at the same time, monogamy requires couples to choose between two partners and release one. “What if you don’t want to let one go?” he asked.
Another Nigerian veteran, Stephen Alajemba, also known as Uwaezuoke, has sparked controversy with his views on polygamy. In an interview with Ugwumba TV, he claimed that marrying less than three wives is sinful. He warned that men with one or two wives are at risk of being poisoned by their spouses.
According to Alajemba, “It’s a sin to marry one or two wives. But if you marry three or four, you’ll be free from sin. If you marry one wife, your life is at risk. The safety of the director is in the hands of the security. If you marry two wives, they’ll conspire to poison you.” He believes that marrying three or more wives provides a sense of security and freedom, as each wife would have her own space and the husband would only need to provide for their basic needs.
