Cooper Sacked, Second EPL Managerial Exit of 2024-2025 Season

Steve Cooper Becomes Second Manager To Lose His Job In 2024-2025 EPL Season

Leicester City Parts Ways with Manager Steve Cooper Amidst Challenging Premier League Run

Leicester City has made the difficult decision to terminate the contract of manager Steve Cooper, following a disappointing start to the 2023-2024 season. The team currently finds itself in 16th place after 12 matches, with a recent 2-1 loss to Chelsea highlighting their ongoing struggles. Notably, they are just two points above the relegation zone.

Cooper took the helm of Leicester City after succeeding Enzo Maresca, who led the club to the 2023-2024 Championship title and promotion back to the Premier League. Since then, Cooper has faced numerous challenges, which culminated in his departure.

In light of this decision, the team has announced that first-team coach Ben Dawson will oversee training, with support from coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes. This temporary setup is expected to be in place until a new manager is appointed, with the aim of completing the process quickly.

Additionally, assistant manager Alan Tate and first-team coach and analyst Steve Rands will also be leaving the club.

The recent defeat against Chelsea marks Leicester City’s sixth loss in the Premier League this season. In the aftermath of the game, Cooper acknowledged the difficulties of competing in the top tier, saying, “I knew how tough the challenge of the season was going to be both on and off the pitch. I believe we can do better, and that has to reflect in our performances to secure better results.”

This change marks the second managerial departure in the Premier League this season, following Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag in October.

Prior to joining Leicester City, Cooper enjoyed a successful tenure at Nottingham Forest, helping them secure promotion in 2022 and maintain their Premier League status until his departure midway through the 2023-2024 season when they were in 17th position. Cooper has also had a fruitful spell with England’s Under-17s, leading them to victory in the 2017 World Cup and guiding Swansea to the Championship play-off final in 2021.
