A dramatic scene unfolded in Onitsha, Anambra State, when an irate mob set two men accused of working with local revenue touts on fire. The tragedy was sparked by a fatal accident in which an innocent bystander lost their life.
According to reports, the two revenue agents and four others were chasing a tipper driver in a dispute over a fee, when the driver lost control and his vehicle ran into an innocent woman, killing her instantly. The mournful scene unfolded as the revenue agents, realizing the enormity of their actions, attempted to flee but were caught by the enraged mob.
A shocked eyewitness reported that “the crowd turned on the aid workers after it was revealed that they were directly responsible for the woman’s death. Two of them were promptly set ablaze, while the other four managed to escape.”
As the people of the region struggle to come to terms with the senseless loss of life, many have expressed their anger and frustration over the continued loss of lives in Anambra State. A local trader lamented, “This is one death too many that has occurred in Anambra in the past two years. The revenue touts of the state government have killed more Ndi Anambra than non-state actors.”
The police responded swiftly to the incident, working to restore order and investigating the circumstances of the accident. Speaking to a local publication, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, stated, “The police responded swiftly to the fatal accident and are currently working with the relevant authorities to determine the cause and find a solution to prevent such incidents in the future.”
