Former PDP Spokesperson Slams Tinubu’s Economic Policies
Kola Ologbondiyan, a former spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has spoken out against the current administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidies and float the naira, labeling the policies “devastating” for Nigeria’s economy.
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Ologbondiyan argued that a gradual approach to subsidy removal, combined with targeted palliatives, would have been a more effective strategy. He emphasized the need for public transportation systems that provide affordable options for citizens.
Ologbondiyan criticized the administration for prioritizing subsidized rice over addressing broader issues affecting Nigerians. He also expressed disappointment with the PDP’s lack of robust engagement with the government, urging the party to present more alternatives to address the country’s challenges.
This comes after a meeting of PDP governors over the weekend, during which they called on President Tinubu to reform the economy.
“As a former spokesperson for the PDP, I subscribe to the party’s founding principles,” Ologbondiyan said. “In the past, we implemented a phased subsidy removal that came with palliatives. In contrast, the current administration’s approach is overly simplistic, focusing solely on subsidized rice without addressing the broader needs of Nigerians.”
Ologbondiyan highlighted the devastating impact of the administration’s policies, citing the surge in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from an average of ₦189 per litre in May 2023 to over ₦1,000 per litre in recent months.
