Tragedy Strikes Benue State: At Least 30 Killed in Weekend Attacks
A series of violent attacks in Benue State’s Kastina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas (LGAs) has left a trail of destruction and loss of life, with at least 30 people reported dead.
According to eyewitnesses, the attacks occurred on Sunday and Monday morning, with reports of armed individuals, estimated to be over 300, believed to be militia from outside Nigeria, targeting rural areas in both LGAs.
Chief Joseph Anawah, a community leader in Logo, described the assault on the Azege settlement and surrounding areas of Tombo Council Ward on Sunday, November 24, 2024, around 7 a.m. He noted that the attackers were clearly visible to the local population, and despite the presence of security forces, they were unable to fend off the invaders due to their overwhelming numbers and advanced weaponry.
It was only after the arrival of a military aircraft that the attackers were compelled to retreat, leaving behind a trail of destruction and death. Anawah reported that more than 20 bodies have been discovered, and efforts are ongoing to locate additional missing persons.
Justine Shaku, the Council Chairman of Kastina-Ala LGA, also confirmed the attacks, stating that numerous individuals were killed in his jurisdiction, and significant property was destroyed. He reported that the attackers, heavily armed, stormed Adabo village and Tse Gwebe settlement in Utange Council Ward of Shitile in Katsina-Ala LGA, killing many people, destroying valuable properties, and looting household items.
Clement Kav, the Logo LGA counterpart, alleged that the attackers claimed ownership of his domain, saying that the Tombo land belonged to them. He reported that 17 people were killed and 37 injured in the attack, but stated that the Governor has mobilized more security to the area, and peace has been restored.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, stating that five bodies were recovered.
