2027: Allied Opposition Parties Challenge Tinubu’s Reelection

2027: Unified Opposition Parties Target Tinubu’s Second Term Bid

For the 2027 presidential elections, opposition parties and groups are joining forces to form a strong coalition aimed at defeating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This alliance, dubbed the “mother of opposition alliance,” seeks to challenge the APC’s hold on power and promote a change in government.

According to insiders, the coalition will be led by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State. Ugochinyere plans to form the coalition, which will proceed with or without the participation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, the PDP’s leadership has been criticized for lacking the capacity to serve as a credible opposition. Ugochinyere has accused the PDP’s leadership of being under the influence of a powerful minister, seeking to weaken the party and ensure it remains in opposition.

Meanwhile, Otunba Segun Showunmi, former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, has launched the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative.” This initiative aims to restore electoral integrity, provide ideological direction for political actors, and rebuild voter confidence.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has thrown its weight behind the alliance, stating that the time has come for Nigerians to demand better governance. CUPP’s national secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, believes that the alliance is a step in the right direction, as it would help challenge the APC and Tinubu’s leadership in the 2027 elections.

Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), expects significant political realignments by mid-2025. Although APGA is not inclined towards mergers, it would support coalitions aimed at promoting equity, justice, and national unity.

The National Consultative Front (NCFront) has taken a leadership role in forming a broad-based political movement. The platform aims to bring together credible leaders from various political parties, including disaffected elements within the APC, PDP, Labor Party, and NNPP. NCFront’s spokesperson, Mallam Hamisu Santuraki, believes that the initiative will help drive the formation and launch of a new ultra-mega political movement of opposition stakeholders and elements from various opposition political parties in the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
