Arsenal’s Champions League Quest Begins with Sporting Lisbon Test
Last weekend, Arsenal ended their three-match winless streak in all competitions with a convincing 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
In the Champions League, the Gunners have claimed two wins out of four matches, but have struggled on the road, failing to score in both of their away games this season. Their 1-0 loss to Inter Milan has left them in 12th place in the revamped league standings.
Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledges that his team must improve their away form, stating: “We know we need to get better at getting results on the road. While we played well against Inter, our performance didn’t translate to the points we needed. Now, we need to be more ruthless and clinical in front of goal, especially away from home.”
With Sporting Lisbon awaiting them, Arteta sees an opportunity for his team to make a bold statement. “This presents a fantastic chance for us to show our capabilities against a top-tier opponent,” he said. “Our focus is on being true to ourselves and coming out on top in this match.”
Sporting, led by former reserve team coach Joao Pereira, is on an impressive run with 17 wins and one draw since the season started. They have also enjoyed success in European competitions, having recently stunned Manchester City with a 4-1 victory.
With a stern test ahead, Arteta is urging his team to seize the opportunity and deliver a strong performance. “We’re excited to take on Sporting Lisbon and show what we’re capable of,” he emphasized. “Our goal is to win the match and make a statement in the Champions League.”
