“Don’t Write Off the Possibility of Atiku Running in 2027”: Segun Sowunmi Speaks
Former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, recently revealed that the possibility of the former PDP presidential candidate running in the 2027 election is still on the table. However, he emphasized that a clear response from Atiku is necessary to confirm the speculation.
Sowunmi made these remarks during the launch of the National Opposition Movement Coalition in Abuja. The coalition aims to strengthen opposition politics and promote credible democratic and electoral processes, ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The decision to contest the presidency shouldn’t focus solely on one individual, but on individuals with a clear vision for Nigeria’s development,” Sowunmi stressed. He suggested that leadership transcends personal background and history, citing the example of Bola Tinubu, who is now in the villa.
When asked about Atiku’s potential candidature, Sowunmi expressed uncertainty, stating, “Atiku hasn’t told me he’s running. I’ve asked him twice, and I’ll ask him once more. If he doesn’t give an answer, that’s it.”
Sowunmi also reflected on his efforts to convince Peter Obi to contest for the presidency under the PDP. He traveled extensively to the Southeast, urging PDP members, including Obi, to contest the election. Although Obi ultimately joined the Labour Party without informing him, Sowunmi commended him for bringing the Southeast’s aspirations to the national stage. He emphasized the importance of evaluating leaders based on their ability to deliver tangible results.
Sowunmi emphasized that the National Opposition Movement Coalition was born out of the urgent need to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy. He expressed concern over the declines in election integrity and the credibility of the judiciary, which is crucial for maintaining balance and preventing government overreach.
The Coalition plans to address these issues and ensure a credible electoral process in 2027.
