Olympic champion Tobi Amusan honored at UTEP Hall of Fame induction

Tobi Amusan Inducted Into University Of Texas El Paso Hall Of Fame

Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the youngest inductee into the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) Hall of Fame.

The 27-year-old athlete was honored alongside four other inductees, including Beto Bautista, Izabela Piekarska, Tony Tolbert, and Brandon Wolfram, during the school’s 21st induction ceremony on October 15.

In a heartfelt message, Amusan expressed her gratitude and pride, saying, “I’m thrilled to introduce the youngest female miner to be inducted into UTEP’s Hall Of Fame Class of 2024. I’m grateful for the opportunities I had during my three semesters at UTEP, and I’m thankful for the support of my coaches, teammates, and staff.” She also thanked her friends and teammates from the class of 2016/2017, saying, “I love you all.”

Amusan’s time at UTEP was marked by success, as she won the national title in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.57 seconds at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also earned three All-American titles and was a runner-up at the NCAA Championships in 2016.

In addition to her recent honor, Amusan was inducted into the Conference USA Hall of Fame in 2023. Her impressive collegiate career saw her win five Conference USA championships and set school records in the indoor 60m hurdles (7.98 seconds) and the outdoor 100m hurdles (12.57 seconds).

Currently, Amusan holds the world record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.1 seconds, achieved during the semifinals of the 2022 World Championships in Oregon. She also secured the world title, making her Nigeria’s first-ever world champion in athletics.

Throughout her athletic career, Amusan has represented Nigeria at three Olympic Games and has claimed titles as a four-time African Games champion, five-time African champion, three-time Diamond League winner, and a two-time Commonwealth Games champion.
