Nigerian Musician Speed Darlington, Counsel Alieke Announce Rearrest in Imo State
Naijawebinfo recalls that Darlington was arrested in October amid a petition filed by singer Burna Boy.
According to a statement released by the musician’s counsel, Stanley Alieke, on Wednesday, Darlington was granted administrative bail in October after spending five days illegally detained.
The counsel explained that a medical emergency required the artist to travel abroad for treatment, rendering him unable to meet his bail obligations by the agreed-upon deadline.
Darlington’s lawyer stressed that the artist had no intention of evading bail. In fact, he had planned to return to Abuja following his performance at Owerri, pending police approval.
Alieke stated in the statement that, “speeding after his performance, he was apprehended on charges that he had renounced his bail. However, our sources indicate that this was allegedly at the behest of the Force Intelligence Bureau’s Deputy Inspector General.
‘On October 8th, our client was provided administrative bail after being lawfully held for five days and extradited from Lagos due to the Burna Boy case. He received a bail date, which he could not meet owing to a medical emergency demanding foreign treatment.
in good faith, our client had planned his return to Abuja subsequent to his performance in Owerri, with lawyers’ consultations and liaison with police officials. Jumping bail was never his plan.
Considering this sudden action by law enforcement, we deem this not only unnecessary but also a brazen attempt to embarrass and disregard our client’s rights. This improper behavior from the authorities reflects an evident misuse of discretion.’
