Nigerian Singer Speed Darlington Arrested Upon Arrival in Nigeria

A recent Facebook post by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has confirmed that Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, known by his stage name Speed Darlington, has been taken into custody by the Nigerian police. According to Adeyanju’s post, Speed Darlington was arrested at a show in Owerri, Imo State, shortly after his return to Nigeria.

The motives behind the singer’s arrest remain unclear, and his legal team, led by Adeyanju, is currently working to determine the charges brought against him. This arrest comes on the heels of a previous detention, when Speed Darlington was held by the Nigerian police over allegations of cyberstalking against his fellow artist, Damini Ogulu, known as Burna Boy.

In related news, Nigerian Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has spoken out about the challenges facing artists in the country, stating that the harsh realities of life in Nigeria are driving the creation of a plethora of talented musicians.

In an interview with the ‘Shopping The Sneakers’ podcast, Tiwa Savage shed light on the tough conditions that many artists face in Nigeria, saying, “When you come to Nigeria, you’ll understand why we breed so many superstars. To survive in Nigeria is something else – that’s why the artists that come out of Nigeria are just like hustlers. They’re just hustling.” She highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of many artists, who often have to work multiple jobs to make a living, and the stigma surrounding the profession.
