PDP alleges Okpebholo and Idahosa withhold representation from Edo constituents

Edo: PDP Accuses Okpebholo, Idahosa Of Denying Constituents Representation

Edo PDP Raises Concerns over Okpebholo, Idahosa’s Delayed Resignation from National Assembly

Yesterday, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), called out Governor Monday Okpebholo and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, for failing to officially resign from their National Assembly positions. He deemed their inaction a disservice to their constituents.

According to the PDP, the duo neglected to quit their roles in the Senate and House of Representatives, which, under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, should be vacated within a fortnight of assuming their new positions in the state government. The party Submission is buttressed by Section 68(1)(d), which states that certain high-ranking officials must relinquish their legislative seats to make way for by-elections.

Mr. Aziegbemi argued that holding dual positions constitutes a shameful representation of the people, urging the governor and his deputy to take the initiative and step down, allowing their seats to be declared vacant and paving the way for new representatives.

The PDP stalwart also lambasted the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the party’s actions as a blatant disregard for the law and a penchant for illegality.

The PDP claims that the administration is guilty of perpetuating a mockery of the democratic system by flaunting rules and regulations, urging the duo to demonstrate respect for the people’s mandate by resigning from their assembly roles and allowing a by-election to be held.

However, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, rejected the PDP’s assertions, labeling them baseless and misinformed. He explained that it is the responsibility of the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to declare the seats vacant, which is in accordance with the Senate rules.

Mr. Itua urged Edo residents to disregard the PDP’s allegations, deeming them a deliberate misrepresentation of the process.
