A Military Leader’s Legacy of Service to the Nation

During My Time In Power Decisions Were Made In The Interest Of The People – Gowon

A Former Head of State Warns Against Regional Interests and Calls for Unity in Nigeria

In a recent meeting with the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Kano State governor, 90-year-old Gen. Yakubu Gowon emphasized the importance of setting aside regional interests and focusing on the country as a whole.

Gowon, who ruled Nigeria as a military leader for nine years, stressed that it’s vital to consider the best aspects of various ideologies and apply them for the greater good. He believes that diverse perspectives can enrich a nation’s development, but differences in opinion should not hinder progress.

Unlike some of his military counterparts, Gowon has refused to be associated with Nigeria’s multi-party democracy. He believes that the country’s progress should not be hindered by regional interests, but rather by fostering cooperation and understanding among all Nigerians.

“‘I urge individuals to think beyond regional interests and focus on Nigeria’s overall advancement. Differences in opinion are natural, but they should never prevent us from working together to address issues for the benefit of the country.’

He emphasizes that his government made decisions based on the best interests of the people and the nation, valuing diverse perspectives without letting them create divisions.

Gowon hopes that the LND’s mission is not to return to a past where each region prioritizes its own interests, but rather to create a united Nigeria where each region considers the collective good.
