Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Launches Inquiry into New Nigeria Peoples Party’s Campaign Funds
In response to the recent arrest of Ifeanyi Okowa, former Delta State governor and PDP’s vice presidential candidate, on allegations of mismanaging campaign funds, the EFCC has initiated an investigation into the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPP) campaign finances.
The probe appears to be targeting NNPP’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, with sources suggesting an attempt to weaken his influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
A source close to the matter revealed that the EFCC has been ordered to open a case file against Kwankwaso, inviting him to respond to allegations of mismanaging campaign funds, a move reportedly sparked by grievances from disgruntled former party members who were since expelled.
In June, a Kano State High Court granted an injunction restraining the EFCC from taking any action against Kwankwaso regarding the allegations. However, sources indicate that the agency may disregard this order due to alleged pressure from higher authorities.
The renewed scrutiny has been linked to Kwankwaso’s recent critical comments about President Tinubu’s alleged ambitions in the North. During a recent speech at Skyline University in Kano, he remarked on attempts to dominate the region, stating that “Lagos would not allow Kano to appoint its own emir.” This perceived criticism has seemingly drawn attention to Kwankwaso’s growing influence.
Celebrations for the wedding of Kwankwaso’s daughter in Kano recently attracted a sizable number of opposition leaders who stayed in the city for over 48 hours, engaging in extended meetings with the NNPP leader, further highlighting his growing influence.
