Lagos to Host 2024 Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup

The global fencing community is abuzz with excitement as the 2024 Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup prepares to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from December 14-15. Top fencing nations from around the world, including the United States, Hong Kong, and Egypt, will come together to compete in the two-day championship.

The event, hosted by Charterhouse Lagos, an esteemed international school in Nigeria, marks a historic milestone as Nigeria becomes the first Sub-Saharan African country to host a fencing World Cup. This opportunity not only highlights Nigeria’s growing reputation in the international sports arena but also showcases the country’s potential for fencing development across the continent.

The list of confirmed participants for the World Cup includes a diverse range of countries, including Ghana, Senegal, Greece, Angola, Togo, and the Benin Republic, along with the host nation, Nigeria. The event presents a valuable opportunity for countries to gauge their skills and gain experience competing at an elite level.

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, expressed his gratitude for this opportunity, emphasizing its importance for Nigeria’s recognition on the global stage. At a recent press conference held at the Lagos Fencing Club, Samuel highlighted the significance of hosting the World Cup.

“We are thrilled that Nigeria has been chosen to host this prestigious event,” Samuel said. “Our partnership with Charterhouse Lagos is invaluable, and we appreciate their support. We are proud to be the first Sub-Saharan African country to host a World Cup, and we are looking forward to showcasing our fencing talents and demonstrating our capability to organize high-caliber events.”

Nigeria has a history of hosting successful fencing competitions, including the African Championships in 2018 and 2020. The upcoming World Cup will provide a unique opportunity for Nigerian fencers to compete against top-tier opponents, earn crucial points for future qualifiers, and gain valuable experience ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
