African Sensation: Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj Revere African Music and Culture, Says Davido
Davido, the Grammy-nominated Nigerian musician, has shared an interesting anecdote about his collaborations with global superstars Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj.
In an exclusive interview with Hot 107.9 FM in Atlanta, the singer opened up about the respect foreign artists have for African culture and music.
He revealed that Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj prefer incorporating African elements into their collaborations, rather than adhering to traditional Western styles.
“When working on my track ‘If It’s Okay’ with Nicki Minaj, she wanted the full, unadulterated African flavor,” Davido shared. “Foreign artists nowadays are keen to borrow from our styles, which makes it easier for me to collaborate with them.”
The ‘Fall’ crooner also shared his experience recording ‘Sensational’ with Chris Brown. He said, “I initially wanted to give it a more American vibe, but Chris insisted we infuse it with Afrobeats. He even asked me to sing in Pidgin!” The song, which features Chris Brown and Popcaan, went on to receive widespread acclaim.
A quick glance at Chris Brown’s discography reveals that he has worked with a slew of African artists, including Davido, Wizkid, Rema, Fireboy, Lojay, and even the likes of Ayra Starr and Tyla from South Africa.
As for Nicki Minaj, she has collaborated with prominent African acts such as Mr. Eazi, Davido, and Skales.
