Lagos Appeal Court Overturns Rape Conviction Against Medical Director

Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, the Medical Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, has had his rape conviction overturned by the Lagos Appeal Court. The decision was made after Olaleye filed an appeal challenging his original conviction and sentence.

Naijawebinfo previously reported that in October 2023, Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced Olaleye to life imprisonment for defiling his wife’s 16-year-old niece.

During the original trial, Justice Oshodi ruled that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, had presented compelling evidence against Olaleye, and that his confessional statement to his former counsel and the Divisional Police Officer at the Anthony Police Station corroborated the charges against him.

Olaleye’s statement, which he later denied during the trial, had implicated him in the alleged crimes. The judge had found his denial to be unconvincing.

However, the Appeal Court disagreed with the lower court’s judgment, ruling that there were errors in the original conviction. As a result, Olaleye has been discharged and acquitted of the charges against him.
