Tragic Boat Accident Claims Lives in Kogi State

In a devastating incident, a boat headed from Kupa Ebe to Katcha Market capsized near Kpata Danbo, resulting in a significant loss of life. According to the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the vessel was carrying passengers when it met its tragic fate.

Apparently, 14 people were lucky enough to be rescued, and they are currently receiving medical attention at nearby healthcare facilities. Unfortunately, the search and rescue efforts are still underway, and sadly, many more lives are feared lost.

Government officials are offering their condolences to the families of the victims and are committed to providing relief support and medical assistance to those affected. Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to deliver immediate aid to the victims’ families, while the Ministry of Health has instructed medical personnel to provide adequate care to the survivors.

The Kogi State Government is commending the swift response and cooperation of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and River Marshals, as well as the authorities of Katcha Local Government Area in Niger State, for their tireless efforts in addressing the crisis.

In light of this tragedy, the government is urging stricter safety measures in marine operations across the state, calling on water transportation operators to avoid night voyages and adopt safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. The government is also committed to implementing legal and administrative frameworks to safeguard the lives of operators and passengers using water transportation.

The government is appealing to all rescue agencies to intensify their efforts to save more lives, and is asking for prayers for the repose of the souls of those who have tragically lost their lives in this accident, as well as strength for their grieving families.
