Speculations of a 2027 alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi have been dismissed by both camps.
Social media was abuzz after photos of Atiku hosting Obi for breakfast at his residence in Adamawa State went viral, sparking rumors of a potential collaboration.
Atiku shared a video of their meeting on his official X account, captioning it, “A morning with my friend, Peter Obi, in the beautiful land of Adamawa.”
The video showed the two leaders seated at a dining table, engaged in friendly conversations over a meal. The viral footage reignited conversations about a potential merger among key opposition figures ahead of the next general elections.
This development comes months after the Deputy National Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hinted at discussions for an alliance between opposition leaders, including Atiku, Obi, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Reacting to the breakfast meeting, Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, clarified that the encounter was a friendly reunion rather than a political strategy session.
Ibe emphasized that Obi was invited to speak at the 20th anniversary of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) and the 16th Founder’s Day, a milestone celebration. He noted that politics cannot separate friends and that the truth is that Obi is a friend of Atiku’s.
Obi’s media aide, Ibrahim Umar, also denied that the Adamawa breakfast meeting was a dress rehearsal for the 2027 joint ticket.
Umar joked that it’s laughable to imagine that every meeting involving party bigwigs like Atiku and Obi would be politicized. He explained that Obi was simply invited to deliver a speech and that the meeting had nothing to do with politics.
