PDP Mergers Ahead: Lawmaker Reveals Plans to Take Down the Ruling Party
In a recent address in his hometown, Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives from Imo State’s Ideato North South Federal Constituency, hinted at a potential merger within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to strengthen its chances in the 2027 general election.
The lawmaker expressed concern over the internal struggles and betrayals within the PDP, which he believes could sabotage the party’s chances of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his address, Ugochinyere emphasized the need for a strong alliance to take down the ruling party, stating, “We cannot allow those who think the party is on its deathbed to destroy our chances of taking power from the APC. Instead, we will merge to collapse the ruling party, bringing an end to the hardship caused by its leadership.”
He also cautioned those engaging in “petty and naive” politics to stop, warning that their efforts will ultimately fail. “I urge the party’s stakeholders to warn those who are playing with the party’s future. The PDP is the largest party in Africa, and our role as the opposition cannot be diminished,” he said.
Ugochinyere appealed to party members across all levels to remain committed and resilient in upholding the party’s ideology, assuring them that “any setback will not deter you from holding onto your party membership.”
He also placed part of the blame for the party’s internal issues on some PDP governors and leaders, who he feels are not doing enough to stop the “childish and naive” politics at play. “I’ll continue to fulfill my campaign promises, including providing water to communities, scholarships, empowerment, and infrastructure projects,” he assured his constituents.
