A Possible Alliance in Sight? Atiku’s Aide Says Merger with Peter Obi is a Possibility

According to sources, a meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has sparked discussions about a potential alliance for the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting, which took place at Atiku’s Yola residence, appears to have been a cordial one, with Obi delivering a keynote speech at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), owned by Atiku, on its 20th anniversary.

Although both camps maintained the visit was above board, with no political undertones involved, social media users are now buzzing with speculation after Atiku shared a video of the breakfast meeting on his social media account.

Despite the crises within the LP and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the meeting has raised questions about a possible alliance for the 2027 presidential election.

Due to the unfolding drama, netizens have taken to social media to share their thoughts, with one user, Theo Agada, suggesting a repeat performance of the 2019 ticket, promising one term and allowing the Nigerian people to decide.

Lagos State LP governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, however, emphasized the need for a united opposition to address the nation’s current hardships, citing Atiku’s recent tweet.

A former campaign director for Peter Obi, Doyin Okupe, who has since defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), offered a different perspective, outlining the ever-changing landscape of politics and stating that his interests lie only in the pursuit of power.

However, Abdulrashek Shehu, an aide to Atiku, has clarified that the meeting between Atiku and Obi did not involve discussions about a potential merger or alliance for the 2027 election. He stated that both politicians would make their position clear at the appropriate time.

According to Shehu, Atiku’s primary focus is on uniting opposition leaders, as he first proposed after the 2023 general elections to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) from succeeding in the next election. The details of their plans will be made public when the time is right, emphasizing that there are no concrete plans on the table as of now.
