Fulham’s Calvin Bassey Believes His Team Was Unlucky to Only Take a Point from Tottenham
Fulham’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday was a welcome respite from their previous 4-1 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite the tough loss, the Cottagers showed significant improvement in their performance at Tottenham’s home ground.
While Spurs dominated possession, Fulham created more meaningful scoring opportunities, demonstrating a marked improvement in their attacking play.
The turning point came in the 54th minute when Brennan Johnson’s stunning strike gave Tottenham the lead. This goal was made possible by a lapse in Fulham’s defense, with Bassey caught out of position inside the penalty area.
However, Fulham responded well to the setback, with Alex Iwobi playing a crucial role in their comeback. Just 13 minutes after Johnson’s goal, Iwobi set up captain Tom Carney, who slotted home the equalizer with impressive composure.
As the match wore on, the tension mounted when Carney received a red card just seven minutes before the final whistle, leaving Fulham to finish the match with only ten players.
Despite being a man down and facing intense pressure from the home side, Fulham’s defense held strong, earning a hard-fought point.
In a post-match interview, Bassey reflected on the game, saying, “I think we deserved more from this match. Fraser Forster made some incredible saves – three in particular that could have been goals for us.”
He also expressed his disappointment at the timing of Carney’s red card, which came as Fulham were building momentum and looking to claim victory.
However, Bassey remained optimistic, pointing out that Fulham managed to hold on for a point without conceding a late goal, a recurring issue for the team in previous matches.
