Tragic Boat Accident in Kogi State: IGP Orders Immediate Inquiry into the Incident
A devastating boat accident in Kogi State has resulted in a significant loss of life, with more than 160 passengers involved. According to reports, only 24 people were rescued, while many others are still unaccounted for.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed his deepest condolences to the government and citizens of Kogi State, particularly to the families affected by this tragic event. He emphasized the gravity of the situation and has instructed the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed that the IGP has mandated the Force Marine officer to lead the inquiry, which aims to identify the contributing factors and develop strategies to prevent similar incidents on the nation’s waterways. The investigation will also focus on enhancing the overall safety and emergency response protocols for water transport across the country.
The IGP reassured the residents of Kogi State and all Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to collaborating with relevant agencies to expedite the rescue of the missing passengers. He urged waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to work closely with the Force Marine Department to implement and enforce essential safety measures to safeguard passengers and operators.
