AC Milan’s Coach Paulo Fonseca Praises Samuel Chukwueze’s Defensive Efforts
After AC Milan’s convincing 3-0 win over Empoli at the San Siro, coach Paulo Fonseca highlighted the impressive defensive work of Samuel Chukwueze, who came off the bench to make a significant impact.
Chukwueze had played a crucial role in Milan’s thrilling 3-2 Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava just a week prior to the Empoli match, but he found himself relegated to the bench for this game. Yunus Musah started on the right wing instead, and Milan’s tactical decision paid off as they extended their unbeaten streak to six games across all competitions.
In his post-match press conference, Fonseca discussed his strategic decisions, particularly the contrasting playing styles of Musah and Chukwueze. He emphasized the importance of having players who can effectively cover defensive roles, especially against Empoli’s tendency to launch long balls.
Fonseca praised Musah’s performance, saying that he brought a crucial defensive dimension to the team, allowing them to maintain a strong defensive shape. He also commended Chukwueze for his adaptability, noting that the Nigerian winger had a significant impact when he came on as a substitute.
Chukwueze almost made a decisive contribution to the scoreline late in the match, delivering a precise cross that found Tammy Abraham at the back post. Unfortunately, Abraham was unable to convert the opportunity, sending his shot wide from close range, leaving Milan fans momentarily frustrated.
Since joining AC Milan from Villarreal in the summer, Chukwueze has struggled to secure a consistent starting position, making 13 appearances across all competitions with just one goal to his name this season.
Rumors are circulating that Turkish giants Besiktas are interested in signing Chukwueze in the January transfer window, but AC Milan views him as an essential asset, particularly as a backup for key players like Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao.
