Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) boss Ibrahim Gusau has spoken out about the Super Falcons’ impressive display in their recent match against France, which ended in a narrow 2-1 loss.
In the aftermath of the Angers match, Gusau praised the team’s fighting spirit and technical prowess, despite the absence of several key players, including Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Oluwatosin Demehin.
According to Gusau, the international friendly provided a platform for talented players from Nigeria’s local leagues to showcase their skills, which he said was a crucial step forward for the sport.
Under interim coach Justin Madugu’s guidance, the Falcons proved resilient against a strong French team, with Ifeoma Onumonu’s goal providing a glimmer of hope for Nigeria as the hosts held a commanding 2-0 lead.
Gusau expressed his delight with the team’s performance, stating that with continued support, the Falcons are well-positioned to build momentum ahead of the WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
The NFF chief also shared his vision for the future of women’s football in Nigeria, including a proposed policy that would require all NPFL clubs to develop women’s teams, bringing the country in line with global best practices.
According to Gusau, this new policy would foster greater investment in women’s football and provide opportunities for young players to receive the exposure they deserve.
By implementing this proposed policy, the NFF aims to transform the women’s football landscape in Nigeria, creating a more nurturing environment for talented young female athletes to flourish.
Gusau believes that the introduction of women’s teams by NPFL clubs will lead to numerous opportunities for young female players to shine on both domestic and international stages.
The Super Falcons’ promising display against France has sparked optimism ahead of their bid to reclaim their title at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
